We will be closed for our annual holiday break from December 24th, 2024 to January 3rd, 2025. If you are in need of urgent help during that time, please contact your regular veterinarian or one of the emergency/urgent care clinics in the area. For less urgent inquiries, please contact us via email (info@foreverlovedvet.ca) during this time, as we plan to offer limited home services on December 28th and 30th on a first-come, first-served basis.
Forever Loved Vet provides compassionate end-of-life care to dogs and cats throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality.
Our veterinary team is dedicated to making the last moments of each pet’s life as fear-free and comfortable as possible by allowing them to stay in their own, familiar home, surrounded by their loving family.
In addition to in-home euthanasia services for dogs and cats, we provide quality-of-life consultations to help you decide if it is time to say goodbye. We can also work with your regular veterinarian to ensure that your pet remains comfortable for the last days of his or her life. Our services include:
Dr. Emily Reiner graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph in 2008. Since that time, she has been working in small animal practice in the Halifax area, where she has witnessed firsthand the joy and heartbreak that come with sharing your life with a pet. As a veterinarian, Dr. Reiner found herself sharing in all those ups and downs with her clients, and she soon realized that the moments surrounding the death of a beloved pet are often some of the most impactful of a person’s life.
Ensuring that the passing of every pet is as peaceful and comfortable as possible has become a passion for her, and she understands why more and more people are asking for in-home euthanasia. Saying goodbye without the stress of a vet visit, and without the pain and fear that some pets feel in transit, makes the end-of-life experience more relaxed and peaceful for everyone. Dr. Reiner feels that ending an animal’s life as humanely as possible is a serious responsibility, but being entrusted with that responsibility by a pet’s family is a great honour.
Forever Loved Veterinary Hospice and In-Home Euthanasia was born of Dr. Reiner’s compassion for families faced with the heavy decisions that come with end-of-life care. She hopes to make the whole process easier for families across the Halifax region.
Penny is originally from Florida and has been living in Nova Scotia for the past two years. She graduated from veterinary school in 2017 and has practiced with small companion mammals since.
Discussing end of life care is unfortunately a daily part of a veterinarian’s routine in hospital settings due to the shorter lifespan of our pets. After a few years of practice, Penny realized she found her consults with senior pets to be some of the most rewarding. She feels that being able to provide pain management to beloved companions or helping them pass with dignity is a sacred and meaningful calling. She recently made her own heavy hearted decision to euthanize her dog Atlas after a long battle with kidney disease.
Dr. Karyn Steele is from Dartmouth and graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI in 2004. After graduation, she did an internship in Charlotte, NC. She practiced there for a couple of years before returning home to Nova Scotia.
Once home, she practiced in HRM for a few years but adventure called and she moved to Abu Dhabi and spent 2 years working at a progressive small animal veterinary hospital.
Throughout her 24+ years in veterinary medicine, she realized the importance of peaceful end of life care for precious furry family members. Although this is the most difficult time, she takes pride in providing a loving, pain free and peaceful transition.
Having had to say goodbye to so many of her own pets, she really empathizes with the pet
parents and strives to make the goodbye a gentle and loving experience.
Tricia Ferris graduated as a Veterinary Technician in 2005. Since then she has worked in a clinic setting helping mostly dogs and cats, but she has also worked with exotics and large animals. In 2010 she moved to the Halifax area and really settled into her role as a vet tech in clinical practice.
She always found that helping clients through the euthanasia process was one of the most rewarding parts of the job, however after losing her precious cat, Scar, she realized that she wanted to focus her practice on end-of-life care. Her own pets have been her saving grace over the years, and she understands how incredibly difficult it is to lose them.
Even after losing her own senior dog during a high-risk surgery, Tricia would still tell you that having to make the decision to euthanize her cat was far more difficult than having her dog succumb to an illness under anesthetic.
Ending a beloved pet’s life is a painful decision, but at the end of the day Tricia knows that doing what is best for the animal is ultimately the most important thing.
Emily grew up in rural Nova Scotia and graduated from an Animal Sciences program in 2006. Having such love for animals at a young age, she knew she would one day work in the veterinary field.
After years of working in clinics, Emily found that helping people plan for their pets’ end-of-life care was where she wanted to focus her attention. After losing her own dog in a hospital setting, Emily wanted to be a part of something that felt more personal.
Sabrina graduated as a veterinary assistant in 2008. She worked at two clinics in HRM before taking an extended maternity leave with her son, Brady. Sabrina loves interacting with the patients, especially cats with their ever-diverse personalities.
Having recently faced the heartbreaking and heavy decision to seek end-of-life care for her beloved cat Little G, Sabrina knows it is important to make those final days – and moments – as smooth and as simple as possible so that you can focus on spending time with your beloved fur friend.
End-of-life decisions are difficult, but they are made out of love. Sabrina works to connect you to the services you need to ensure the process is as straightforward and easeful as it can be.
